Blackstone Kitchens: A Natural Light Case Study

I was recently asked to photograph Blackstone Kitchen’s newly opened showroom in Colchester, Essex, using only Natural Light.

As designers, manufacturers and installers of hand-painted English style kitchens, all of Blackstone’s kitchens are made from real wood, making authenticity a key aspect of their brand.

This is something that natural lighting can add in abundance.

My last blog post, all about the importance of natural light, highlights just how well natural light can help to bring a level of authenticity to a photo shoot. To help Blackstone Kitchen’s achieve this, I headed down to their showroom from my base in Ipswich, Suffolk at around 11am to ensure I caught the best of the day’s light and avoid the need for any flash or studio lighting.

Focusing on detail and quality of the product – two vital aspects of Blackstone’s offering – was the aim of the shoot, along with capturing their range candidly and naturally – enabling potential buyers to visualise one of their kitchens in their own home!

The Results

I’ve chosen a selection of images captured for their company website below, to demonstrate the results of shooting with natural light…

Gleaming work surfaces really shine thanks to the light bouncing off the walls and wall cabinets too – creating an almost ethereal vibe… what a lovely place to spend cooking up a storm:

Colour choices are so important when it comes to kitchens, and to showcase complimentary colours as they were intended, it’s important to avoid the distortion that can come with artificial lighting:

On close ups, using natural light rather than artificial lighting, avoids any distracting contrasts when it comes to light and shadow – allowing potential buyers to visualise reality:

Natural light is perfect for creating the illusion of space. Although with this product, ‘illusion’ isn’t really accurate as there is certainly plenty of space available!

I hope you have enjoyed this little insight into the work recently completed for Blackstone Kitchen’s – it really is such a delight to work with high quality products such as this – a joy to photograph.
